Why I See Richmond County as RICH! part1

I have lived here all my life with exception of two years in another county. Despite all the negativism and people running after High School and College to other places, they forget how what they have gained in life could help our area, and so off they go never to return again. There are those who have put a lot of blood sweat and tears into this county to make thing better for all. I see things much different than these folks who run. I see a place where God has blessed and given great opportunity to the people of this area. Many times we do not see the wealth of a place until we see someone else capitalize on it. I have heard all the negative, but look at our land, business location, family atmosphere, people who have achieved greatness, we have developed it all. When I walk into many businesses, I see people who are trying to make this community a better place. I could easily walk away and think the grass is greener somewhere else, but it is not. I challenge all Richmond County Residents to pursue new small business and make this place a thriving place. Big business has not been the life of this county, you have! Lets keep Richmond Rich!                                Part 1 of 3

THE City of ROCKINGHAM

Founded in 1784 as the official County Seat, Rockingham historically has been the center of commerce in Richmond County. The city and the surrounding area abounds in "places to go" and "things to do". An All-American City, Rockingham has continued to promote its historic and cultural past.
With significant scenic and natural areas, including the Pee Dee River & National Wildlife Refuge, Sandhills Game Management Area and Blewett Falls Lake, outdoor activities are endless. Go boating, skiing, or swimming. For the wildlife enthusiasts, fishing and hunting are popular sports. The area is rich in deer, dove, turkey and other small game. There are numerous hunt clubs located in the area with memberships available.
If golf is your game, Rockingham is home to two great courses: The Richmond Pines Country Club, a semi private course (designed by the father of golf course architecture, Donald Ross), and Loch Haven Golf Course, a public facility, both only 5 minutes from downtown Rockingham.
The Rockingham Speedway and Rockingham Dragway offer year round events that bring thousands of folks to our area. Both are just 5 minutes from downtown.
Other nearby attractions include the Rankin Museum of American Heritage, The National Railroad Museum & Hall of Fame, the N.C. Zoo, Seagrove Potteries, The Uwharrie National Forest and Pinehurst, home of the world's finest golf facilities.

The History Of Richmond County

Present-day Richmond County was first settled by Native Americans living along the Pee Dee River. Richmond was part of Anson County, which was formed in 1750 from Bladen County. The General Assembly formed Richmond County from Anson in October 1779. The citizens cited the hardship in crossing the Pee Dee River to go to the courthouse in Anson County, as their reason for wanting a separate county with the dividing line of the Pee Dee River.
Richmond County was named for Charles Lennox, the third Duke of Richmond, who criticized the policy of the British toward the American colonies. The county seat was known as Richmond Courthouse. Scotland County was formed from Richmond in 1899.
The first court in the new county was held in December 1779 at the old Presbyterian Meeting House in the Zion Community. About 1783, after raising money from taxes to pay for buying land and laying out a town, a new courthouse was built in what is today downtown Rockingham. In 1784 the name of the town was changed to Rockingham in honor of Charles Watson-Wentworth, second Marquis of Rockingham, and supporter of American independence.
Dockery Meeting House (which was the forerunner of Cartledge Creek Baptist Church) was chartered in 1774, Mt. Pleasant Methodist in 1780, First Methodist Church of Rockingham in 1786, Concord Methodist Church in 1787, and Zion Methodist Church in 1829. There was a Presbyterian Meeting House in Rockingham around 1788.
The County grew slowly as many families moved down from Maryland, Virginia, and up from South Carolina. The Dockery Brick house, built in 1830, and the Leak-Wall House, built in 1854, are both still standing. The County began to grow more as the economy diversified from agriculture to cotton mills. The Richmond Mill was chartered in 1833 and was the seventh cotton mill chartered in North Carolina. It operated until 1865 when it was burned by Sherman's troops. It was rebuilt in 1869 and renamed Great Falls Mill. It burned again in 1972, and the ruins are still standing. Other cotton mills sprang up in the county.
The first railroad line through Richmond County was begun in 1861, but stopped for the Civil War and then resumed in 1869. In 1872 a woolen mill was built, and the town around it was named Hamlet. The owner of the mill deeded land to the railroad. The first train to reach Hamlet was the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line on August 10, 1877. The Hamlet Railroad Depot was built in 1900 and is still standing today housing a railroad museum. The town of Hamlet grew and became a railroad center. The Hamlet Opera House was built around 1912 and was almost identical to the Bijou Theatre in Wilmington. The area became known for its culture. Today the building is on the National Register of Historic Places, and a group is attempting to restore the building.
The town of Ellerbe began as people came to the area for the mineral springs. A church, school, and post office were established and all went by the name of Ellerbe Springs, which was later shortened to Ellerbe. The hotel was built in 1906 and is still standing today -- Ellerbe Springs Bed and Breakfast.
Richmond Technical Institute was built in 1965, and today is a community college that offers degrees in various technical and vocational occupations, as well as academic classes that can be transferred to a four-year college.
The NC Motor Speedway was built at the intersection of Highway #1 and #177 and the first NASCAR race was held on October 31, 1965. The track and the Rockingham Dragway have evolved into one of the major tourist attractions of Richmond County.

Richmond Raiders Football

I have heard many say various things about our GREAT Football Program, BUT look at some of the youth of this program who have made it big out there. Well, our football staff present and past are to be commended on a professional job. You know, scouts don't just go everywhere to find the best, they go somewhere (RICHMOND). I know, it sounds like I'm just bragging, well mabe, but look at the record. I am personally glad that our kids can have opportunities like this for their future. My main point is; LOOK HOW GREAT RICHMOND IS! Love this county and its people. We together being positive about our home will see greater things come to us. Thanks RSHS and all Jr. High School coaches and staff and supporters...

The Richness

Up to now, I have been very sporatic with my mentions. I want to now concentrate on the specifics of this great place. As we work very hard to draw industry to our area, I want to sell the fact that we have the greatest labor force in this region. We also have the greatest education program to prepare the workers. I have purposely attended meetings around this county to understand the mentallity of the people who represent us. When I hear negative, I remember at the poles. We must love our County and City to make it a GREAT place to bring jobs. You know, the slightest hint of negativity will push the largest blessings away. I am here to publish the fact that we love our area and want to make it a place for our kids to come back to and help us make it greater. Thank you to a civic workers who LOVE RICHMOND and honestly are trying to bring the best here. We do deserve the best here. We have educated and raised (as Mom would say) some great people in this nation. We will in the future publish some bios of these folks for you. We want those youth who go and get great educations to sow back into their beginnings. Thank you Educators who tolerated people like myself in our County Schools. Hind sight is for sure 20/20. I really love Richmond County and hope you can see the direction I want it to go. If we talk positive about us, we will see great things happen here.

For The Evangelist of Falling Creek

My experience was a very short one and hope to go back soon. You have helped to redirect our wonderful youth of the Falling Creek Park area. I appreciate men who work hard to help RICHMOND be all it can be in this area. Never give up on your very positive efforts, because they will produce greatness! These young men and women will be the future of your present efforts and will put their hands to the plow to keep Richmond County a place to be proud of. THANK YOU!
